Where has my hair gone?

Wigs

Just because you have lost your hair, it is not obligatory to wear a wig, the choice is yours.

You may be just as happy wearing alternative headwear such as headscarves, bandanas and turbans or even no wig at all. If you do decide to wear a wig, there is a tremendous selection available in short, medium and long length contemporary hair styles. They are manufactured in all colours and made in both synthetic and human hair. Wigs can be bought on-line or in many major department stores. There are wigs made from human hair and wigs made from synthetic hair. The basic difference between the two is price, with the human hair wigs being the more expensive option. Be open minded about buying a wig; there is bound to be one that will suit your face shape and life style.

Although it may take a while for you to decide whether to wear a wig, it is worth trying a few on as they may look better than you think. Whichever type of wig you choose there are advantages in wearing a wig. The main one is that the hair on your wig will probably look a lot better than your own hair ever did and the bonus is that you will never have a bad hair day again!

Wig cutting
Most wigs benefit from being cut by a hairdresser who has been trained to cut wigs. Once a wig is cut it looks more individual which makes you feel more confident when you wear it. Celebrity hairdresser Trevor Sorbie, offers a wig cutting service at his salons. Visit trevorsorbie.com and then follow the link named ‘my new hair’.

Cyberhair/Cyberlite wigs
If you have complete hair loss, a range of cyberlite and dermalite wigs are available from Trendco. Although these are a more expensive wig option, they may be worth considering if your budget permits. ‘Cyberhair’ is a fibre that is the closest imitation to human hair. It feels natural and is easy to maintain. It is lightweight, retains moisture and will always return to its original style. However a cyberhair wig is custom made for you by a cyber technician and this fact is reflected in the price. For more details visit trendco.co.uk

Dermalite wigs
Again if you are suffering from complete hair loss you may like to consider a dermalite wig. However, these wigs are made from human hair which means that you would have to maintain the style as you would if you had your own hair. Again they are one of the more expensive wig options For more details please visit trendco.co.uk

The pros and cons of different types of wigs

Wig TypeAdvantagesDisadvantages
Human Hair
  • They look natural
  • They are made to measure
  • They are cooler and more comfortable to wear
  • The style can determined by you, not the wig designer
  • They last for 2/3 years
  • They are more expensive than synthetic hair wigs
  • This type of wig needs to be styled after each washing which is time consuming
Synthetic Hair
  • They are cheaper than human hair wigs which means that you can buy different styles to suit your activities
  • They travel well
  • They stay in shape after washing so no styling is required
  • They are less likely to colour fade than human hair wigs
  • They stay in shape after rain!
  • They don’t last as long as human hair wigs, 5-6 months if worn daily
  • It isn’t possible to change the style
  • They get damaged when exposed to heat

Washing your wig
Most manufacturers include instructions on how to wash your wig. If you wear your synthetic wig daily then wash it every 2/3 weeks. Never expose a synthetic wig to intense heat from hairdryers/hair straighteners/heated rollers/tongs.

Wigs and VAT
If you lose your hair through Alopecia or chemotherapy, the wig you buy is not subject to VAT. This presents a substantial saving so mention this at the point of ordering

Wigs and the NHS
The NHS makes provision for the supply of wigs for patients who need them. You need to have a referral from the dermatology department of your local hospital so ask your GP to refer you

Toppers/ Hair pieces/Wig extensions/Quick Fix pieces
Depending on the degree of your hair loss, you may find that wearing a hair piece or topper will solve the problem. Basically toppers and hair pieces give partial coverage only where you need it, thus eliminating the need to wear a full wig. For a full range of options please visit trendco.co.uk
